What is CSR?

Am quite sure that we have all seen or heard the term Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR as it is popularly called. But do we really know what it means?
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also called corporate conscience, corporate citizenship or responsible business has had so many different definitions from various schools of thought and disciplines. But the definition that I love the most for its simplicity and it's ability to cover what we are all about is the Business Dictionary definition which defines CSR as "A company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates. Companies can express this sense of responsibility in several ways. But it should always produce one outcome: to benefit the environment and it's occupants.
There are several areas and ways through which companies can be socially responsible which includes waste and pollution reduction, contributing educational and social programs, earning adequate returns on the employed resources amongst others. The sole responsibility of this platform is to ensure that the private sector as well as we individuals discover the importance of being socially responsible.
