Reporting banks CSR activities in bariga local government

ON the 1st of October, 2015 Students of the university of Lagos, Department of Accounting visited the Bariga area of Lagos state to inquire from the residents on the CSR activities embarked by the banks so as to know if they actually benefit from such financial initiative.
When the group members visited Bariga police station to know what security measures the banks has put in place to ensure that residents are not exposed to robbery attack as a result of the positioning of the banks in that area, a police officer who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on behalf of the PPRO said the banks has not helped the residents in terms of putting some security measures n place. He further said, they post at least three police officers at each of the banks in Bariga and the banks do not even fuel their patrol van letalone, buying a patrol van for them.
Another resident of Barga who gave his name as Akeem said the banks has not done anything for the community in terms of providing borehole water facilities. A market woman at first bank in Bariga said  that the banks has failed in terms of providing waste bin for them because Bariga is known to be a dirty area and the banks make millions of naira yearly in their community yet they can't assist them in disposing their waste.
Our group members observed the various areas and saw that the drainage system is bad, the street light are bad, the environment is dirty and the banks keep on making millions in those areas and they cannot contribute to the social development of the area.
When our group members visited first bank, the marketing manager said it is their head quarter that conduct CSR activities across the country. At wema bank, the manager also referred us to their headquarter. At diamond bank, the manager said they provide books for students in the area as part of their CSR activities. When the group leader asked the manager if they have future responsibilities they'll embark in the community, he said they want to provide scholarships for 20 students in bariga.
Based on our findings on the CSR activities the banks embark on, there's no positive impact on the lives of the residents. We implore the government to regulate the banking sector to step up their CSR projects in the area they are situated in so that the residents of those area can have a positive impact as a result of the localisation of the banks in those area.

What is CSR?

Am quite sure that we have all seen or heard the term Corporate Social Responsibility or CSR as it is popularly called. But do we really know what it means?
Corporate social responsibility (CSR), also called corporate conscience, corporate citizenship or responsible business has had so many different definitions from various schools of thought and disciplines. But the definition that I love the most for its simplicity and it's ability to cover what we are all about is the Business Dictionary definition which defines CSR as "A company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates. Companies can express this sense of responsibility in several ways. But it should always produce one outcome: to benefit the environment and it's occupants.
There are several areas and ways through which companies can be socially responsible which includes waste and pollution reduction, contributing educational and social programs, earning adequate returns on the employed resources amongst others. The sole responsibility of this platform is to ensure that the private sector as well as we individuals discover the importance of being socially responsible.
